There are a few ideas we have come out with, such as Korea, Europe, Arica, Malaysia and lastly Stree Art culture. Lastly, we voted the most for street art. I have searched for some images of street art, I think this topic will be interesting for our topic.

Field Trip

(Week 3, 22 Jan)
This Saturday, we went to Mah Meri Culture Village field trip on Carey Island. It was Orang Asli village full of their wonderful culture. The image below is Mah Meri Culture Village front door.
Fig. 1: Mah Meri Culture Village (Week 3, 22 Jan 2022)

"Mah Meri" mean jungle people, they are one of the 18 Orang Asli groups. They are skilled in crafting statues that are made from wood, which are nyireh batu tree(darker wood) or nyireh bunga tree(lighter wood). They mostly craft deities, humans, flora and fauna figurines. They believed the Moyang Puting Beliung(right statue) can stop the tsunami happening on their island. Another reason they craft is that they believe in spirit, for example, they cut the tree and they have to plant to replace back. For animals, if they saw the tiger die, they will craft a statue to replace the tiger.

Normally man will do the wood crafting because the wood is heavy. Hence, women will do the leaf origami such as bookmark, earing, purses, clothing, etc. Our tour guide introducing their handmade purse in figure 3 image.

Later on, she introduces their rumah moyang, is a place for them to communicate with their moyang(ancestor sprite). Usually, they will tell their moyang when they want to something, such as wedding, ceremony or any festival. The image below front is the sarung and the inside the house is their moyang.

Moving on, we went inside the exhibition. The statue in the below image is "Moyang Harimau Berantai" statue, it was a spirit of the tiger in chains which is craved to replace a tiger that had to be killed because of being trapped inside a wild boar's trap. The interesting part is the tiger chains and the ball in the mouth can move, and it is crafted we a wood without any attaching.

Mah Meri only has a 3000 population and 450 families in the village. In the image below is 18 group of Orang Asli, they all have their own language. Based on what I heard from Mah Meri language, it is sound like the Vietnamese language but it is not. Furthermore, Mah Meri beliefs are different from other groups of Orang Asli, Mah Meri believes in spirits and some belives in ghosts.

This boat is crafted for healing purposes, it has to finish the crafting in one day without stopping. After compleating, they will release the boat to the sea. Besides, they also made a boat for a covid pandemic.

Moreover, their wedding ceremony have contains seven rituals. These rituals can take up about 3 days to complete. Such as finding the bride, games, tooth filing, presentation of the bridal couple etc. Wedding headdresses, clothing and decoration are made from origami.

Here's a video of us learning to make origami from Orang Asli girls. It needs an attentive and patient to make a nice origami. Therefore, it was quite hard for me to learn.

We have tried one of the wedding rituals, tali jodoh, mean marriage puzzle. A marriage puzzle is a wooden puzzle with a string and must play by the groom. Furthermore, we also try the find the bride wedding ritual. Few women are hiding in the white curtain including the bride, and everyone has to raise their hand up. The groom has to find the bride hand, if the groom chose the wrong hand means he is not ready for marriage. Moving on, the groom and bride have to answer the elder's questions honestly.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2
General Feedback: Make sure after submitting the presentation video, update and upload the video to our own blog as well.
Specific Feedback: All the ideas are good, need to discuss and think about the purpose of doing these.

Week 3
General Feedback: Turn on the camera when recording the presentation, for the presentation slides, don't forget to add "content" in the slides.
Specific Feedback: For the Research Objective & Research Question put one enough and need to rephrase the sentence. For our furniture idea, we need to think about what it symbolizes.

Week 4
General Feedback: -
Specific Feedback: Demonstrates some understanding of research methods, the scope is relatively wide but has managed to keep it focused. That being said, rigour in research can be better, and more visual research to support the proposal would be better. Evidence of brainstorming or idea exploration is implicit in the presentation and is adequate. Written plainly with a hint of academic rigour and communication, stating the selected theme, concept & approach of the research, with a single citation–less is not more. Overall, adequately done.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
In this course, I have experienced Mah Meri culture on the field trip. It is interesting to experience their, clothing, wedding, dance, games, traditional origami and more. Besides, our group will have a meeting every week, to discuss and distribute tasks equally. Each of the members did contribute and was responsible to complete the task given.

Observation
I have observed how the Orang Asli preserve their culture till now, where do they come from, what are their traditions, and what they are struggling as a community. Moreover, this proposal also helped me to discover different types of street art. Before the research, never know that Malaysia is that famous and had a lot of beautiful street art and every street art have their own meaning.

Findings
In this learning process, I found out that art developing knowledge on culture can help us avoid misunderstanding. It is worth trying and experiencing new things outside your comfort zone. Furthermore, I think our group did good in group work, but there's still more to be improved.
